5 Steps to a Great Kitchen
Published December 4, 2009 at 12:03 amYou love to cook, but don’t like your kitchen.
There can be many reasons for this, so let’s start with a few basic questions: Do you have enough space? Can friends and family members join comfortably in your joy of cooking? Is there plenty of natural light and fresh air? Do you have easy access to both indoor and outdoor dining?
Can the cook play an equal part in every party?
Many clients have come to us with these issues. While each family setting requires a unique design, the threads connecting them illuminate the path to it.
Here are some basic guidelines we have found to be useful.
1. Start with a master plan for the house and the site.
2. Eliminate unnecessary barriers.
3. Provide plenty of counter-height workspace, and check the layout for efficiency.
4. Work out the lighting plan in conjunction with electric power outlets.
5. Select cabinets, counters, appliances and finishes to complement the design as it develops.
Following these five steps will not solve all your problems, but it will create the conditions for understanding them.
